Telephone
1. A Game of “Telephone”We only think we communicate Sumi Foley Extra Credit P.P. Presentation Intercultural Communications Speech 102 Jim Marteney Summer Quarter/2010
2. In a long distance relationship communication is based solely on our new era of technology. 1586 miles away to be exact, is a man that I am dating. We have had two arguments in the last month due to our lack of proper communication. And it is not for lack of trying.
3. The amazing thing about communication is that 93% is not even spoken. So with that being said, how is a long distance relationship supposed to operate effectively?
4. Forms of Communication *Kinesics: our physical interactions *Proxemics: our spacing between us and others *Paralanguage: our tone and pacing on how we communicate *Other forms: clothes, food smell and time.
5. Words: a specific collection of sounds that symbolize an object, idea or place for example Para language: how we say something from the pace of our language to to tones to how we emphasize words. Nonverbal: all the physical mannerisms that accompany the words and paralanguage.
6. There are many ways to communicate through nonverbal communication: Repeating-almost reinforcement, a head nod while acknowledging to imply a yes Complimenting-such as adding a smile to a phrase or a pat on the back Substituting-an action used in place of speaking Regulation-a way of acknowledging when it is his/her turn Contradicting-It is possible to say one thing when our tone of voice implies something completely different Spatial Distance-there are personal comfort zones, how far apart one is while speaking to another
7. What I found to be such a relief is that the miscommunication between my boyfriend and I had little to do with our words and everything to do with the fact that we can’t see each other, so we are in essence missing 93% of what we say.
8. With that being said it is safe to say that nonverbal and paralanguage are more than 10 times more important to understanding the message than words.
9. So, we can communicate through words, via text, email, skype and facebook. But the truth is we are missing the core of communication. We are missing the smile, the smell of parfume, the light tap on the knee, the tone in which one is speaking. These are the power behind the words. Without them, I don’t think we are really saying anything.
10. How to avoid a bad game of telephoneBy misunderstanding so much of what we say due to lack of paralanguage, kinesics, proxemics and other forms of communication, it is imperative that we learn to use still other forms such as: Emoticons- , ;-), :*, <3, all representing emotions to imply physicality Explanation- details that would in person be left out. To help better understand what one is implying Much more verbal interaction to learn faster about the other persons idiosyncrasies, humor, ideas etc.
11. My mother always said that “actions speak louder than words”…I guess she was right
