  • 1. Canadienne Cows What the world is missing and how we are losing our cultural identity along with it! By Edward Andrews
  • 2. What exactly are we talking about?
    • The only breed of cattle to have been developed on the North American continent. Known to be hardy and dependable.
    • A very unique blend of various breeds from Gascony, Brittany, and Normandy which were allowed to interbreed freely.
    • A part of our heritage from the times of the first settlers, around 1608 – 1610.
  • 3. Why it’s important to the circle of life.
    • The French Canadian Cattle Breeders Association was formed to prevent the extinction of this species.
    • Many artisan products come from this cow which were once staples. It is a highly connected part of Quebec’s terroir.
    • It is now an endangered species with fewer than 1000 head worldwide.
  • 4. Why it needs to be saved
    • The Canadienne Cow is a part of our culture, heritage, and terroir. Our pioneering spirit is embodied in this breed.
    • Sustainability holds a future for this cow, but the public needs to be better educated on what is at stake.
    • Offers a great deal of artisan products which Chefs should be aware of.
