We recently built wearable gadget for Air Quality Monitor with data upload capability and Cloud server for storing historical data and computing trend analysis.
This slide deck is my personal learning of impact of Air pollution on our health through that journey and an attempt to share with others who could benefit from that learning

Effect of CO2 on Health
Researchers at the Berkeley Lab found that moderately high indoor
concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) can significantly impair people’s
decision-making performance.

Why are they relevant
• Urbanization and Industrialization continuously degrading the
quality of Air
• More and more people today suffer from breathing ailments –
many of them are incurable
– Asthma
• One in 12 people (about 25 million, or 8% of the U.S. population) had asthma
in 2009, compared with 1 in 14 (about 20 million, or 7%) in 2001 [Ref]
• An estimated 300 million people worldwide suffer from asthma, with 250,000
annual deaths attributed to the disease [Ref]
– COPD, Emphysema [mostly affect people above 40]
• COPD is the third leading cause of death in America, claiming the lives of
134,676 Americans in 2010.1
• In 2011, 12.7 million U.S. adults (aged 18 and over) were estimated to have
COPD.2 However, close to 24 million U.S. adults have evidence of impaired
lung function, indicating an under diagnosis of COPD.

Measuring Air Quality: Up Close
• Eye, the fastest sense organ, is the super-highway to brain
– Retina processes around 10 million bits of information [source]
• Technology available to build small device to ‘Read’ the
‘Quality’ of Air in Realtime
Wearable Air Monitor
to tell you quality of ambient air
around you wherever you are
• Capture the readings, store them
in cloud and access them later
• Define your preference envelope
• Set alarms and the monitor warns
you when you move outside your
envelope

Create your personal Air Analytics
• Keep tab on the quality trend of the air you
inhale
• Learn future health impact based on your past
air quality trend and your ailment history
• Plan for your respiratory health
• Live healthier
Awareness is the first step to Actionable Intelligence

What can you do?
• Keep Exercising – Maintain physical and mental
fitness!
• Build Awareness on ambient air quality and your
respiratory health – use wearable air quality monitor
• If you cannot change your environment, start using
HEPA-based Air Purifier
– They clean 99.9% air pollutants including air-borne
microbes
– Car Air purifiers and Room Air purifiers available from
leading HVAC vendors viz. Daikin, Panasonic, BlueAir
