What are the best architectures – Do they look like the best by mere appearance or are they the
most viable constructions? I believe that the best architects of India of are those who can
innovate creatively keeping in mind the practical aspect of things, and also optimize space utility
creating a unit that suits the taste and culture of the people.
Though the list is quite extensive, I have tried to capture the once that are top ranked as per the
industry in general and have many awards and accolades to their credits. So, the list goes like
this:
Deepak Mehta, Principal Architect, Deepak Mehta and Associates
Having a vast experience of 28 years, he is an IIT Roorkee alumnus and has handled over 100
projects and 80,000 residential units across India. Bearing a progressive attitude, he started his
architectural firm in Delhi in 1987 with the vision of creating innovative and inspiring
architecture that bears a futuristic approach. He and his team are exemplary at feasibility and
impact assessment studies and are proficient at design and development of human settlements,
regional and urban planning, environmental planning, engineering and architectural and
engineering design.
The firm has earned a great reputation in the industry and won various awards such as Global

Arjun Malik, Principal Architect, Malik Architecture
Masters in architecture from Advanced Architectural Design, Columbia University after
completing his Bachelor in Architecture degree from Rachana Sansad Academy of Architecture,
Arjun carries the architectural DNA from his father Mr. Kamal Malik. His designs are based on

constructing in a non-conventional way.
Amongst other national and international work that earned his appreciation, the most attractive
one remains 'Residence at Alibag' in Mumbai completed in the year 2010. He has won many

Amongst his various projects, the ones worth a mention are the Vastu building at Worli Seaface,

Dikshu C Kukreja, Principal Architect, CP Kukreja Associates (CPKA)
Mr. Dikshu C Kukreja after having completing his Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from
School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi further pursued M.Arch (Urban Planning) from
Harvard University, U.S.A.
He has been honored with the title of “Young and most sought after architect” by Union Urban
Development minister in the year 2011 and Best Architect in India in the Design of Residential
Buildings by CNBC an CRISIL while his firm was listed amongst the top 100 design firms in the

Manit Rastogi, Managing Partner, Morphogenesis
A founding member of Association for Development and Research of Sustainable Habitat’s

Abhin Alimchandani, Director, STUP Design Forum
Abhin has a Masters of Aesthetics and Architectural design degree and an MPhil in History and
Theory of Architecture from France and believes in creating something revolutionary through
usage of innovation and technology which is relevant to context, sustainable and meets global
standards.

3. He has given form to special architecture with a mix on Indian and French design and has a wide
range of admirable portfolio to speak of. He believes that architecture should be about ideas and
respects unique creations in the world. Abhin’s most interesting works includes The Presidential
Palace in Ghana that spells the culture of the people residing there, The Indian Air Force
Museum built in a contemporary style to add pride to the officers and the Indian Oil Corporation
Headquarters.
His firm STUP Design Forum specializes in Master Planning, interior design and all aspects of
building engineering and project management apart from the core proficiency of architecture.
Kapil Gupta, Principal Architect, Serie Architects
Kapil Gupta completed his graduation from Sir JJ School of Architecture, Mumbai and went on
to pursue post-graduation from Architectural Association school of Architecture, London. He
had a modest starting of his firm Serei Architects which now operates globally with offices in
London, Mumbai and Beijing.
He served as a director of the Urban Design Research Institute, Mumbai for five years and as a
part of Indian team, won a special award and second prize at the Sustainable Urban Systems
Design Competition in Japan. He has delivered many award winning projects which include Blue
Frog Acoustic Lounge and Studios, The Tote, Thanks Boutique, and the Leo Burnett HQ in
Mumbai, India. His ongoing projects include Bohacky Residential master plan and housing in
Bratislava and 440-units of Middle Income Housing in Ruzinov, Bratislava and two schools in
Mumbai.
His architectural brilliance reflecting the works of his firm has also found place in the exhibition
in Hong Kong University Shanghai Architecture Gallery, Shanghai in 2009 and in the
Architectural Association School of Architecture in November 2010.
Martand Khosla, Founding Partner, Romi Khosla Design Studios (RKDS)
Martand Khosla essentially believes in an evolved and complex thought process which can be
transformed into simple designs that is sociologically impactful. Having AA diploma from
London, his first architectural creation A Hospice for poor patients in New Delhi had won the
WA award.
From there he ceaselessly tasted the fruit of success and fame and his work was constantly
praised and recognized both by national and international media. He has exhibited his flair for
excellent work both in Europe and India and has written several impactful books on urbanism
and informal economy which have been published in over a dozen countries.
Romi Khosla Design Studios specializes in Corporate and Institutional architecture and has many
projects to boast of including Volvo Eicher corporate Headquarters, Delhi, Suzlon Energy
Padubidri SEZ, Castro Café and gallery at JMI University, New Delhi and Indian Embassy
Tashkent, Government of India. His building, the student’s canteen in New Delhi has been
featured in the UK as one of the best buildings of the 21st Century.

4. Sameep Padora, Principal Architect, Sameep Padora and Associate
An architect who refuses to use the conventional designing methods just for the sake of it with
each project being preluded by a brain storming session on the technology, material and
innovative ideas to be utilized to deliver the much required uniqueness to the project.
Sameer and his firm has delivered many inspirational projects which include Spiral rise,
Hyderabad, 321 Tardeo, Mumbai, Travancore Palace Garden, Delhi , Galeecha Pavilion (09 &
10), Mumbai. He has won Architectural Review (AR) Emerging Architecture Commendation
Award 2010 and Society Interiors Editors Award for Designer of the Year 2010 besides many

Christopher Charles Benninger, Principal Architect, Christopher Benninger Architects
Christopher studied urban planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and architecture
at Harvard's Graduate School of Design. A visionary, he was the founder of School of Planning,
Ahemdabad and Center for Development Studies and Activities, Pune. He is on the Board of
Editors of CITIES journal (UK) and on the Board of the United States Educational Foundation
(Fulbright Foundation) in India. He is also on the Board of Governors of the School of Planning
and Architecture, New Delhi.
He contributed to the provision of sanitation, potable water, electricity, storm drains, paved lanes
with street lighting and community services to innumerable citizens in Kolkata falling under the
lower income group by being a part of the Busti development program initiative by the
government.
His famous work include the Center for Development Studies and Activities, the Mahindra
United World College of India( recipient of the Business Week/Architectural Record Award for
Excellence in the year 2000) , the Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies, the YMCA
International Camp, Nilshi, India, the Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies and

Brinda Somaya, Somaya and Kalappa Consultants
After pursuing her Bachelor of Architecture from Mumbai University followed by Master of
Arts from Smith College in Northampton, MA, USA, Brinda decided to start a firm of her own
by the name of Somaya and Kalappa consultants in the year 1978.
She is a staunch believer in green technology minimizing waste and reusing and recycling in the
best possible manner thus reducing carbon emissions. Her work varies from large corporate and
industrial projects to rehabilitation of a village devastated by an earthquake and restoration of
2000 years old cathedral.
Her work includes building up campus for Tata Consultancy Services, Banyan Park (Mumbai),
Nalanda International School (Vadodra) and Zensar Technologies (Pune). She has won

Lifetime Achievement.
