This document outlines plans for a seminar to design age-appropriate illustrated storybooks that teach personal safety and emotional awareness to urban children ages 6-12. The goals are to impart lasting lessons through an engaging format and address the lack of a common standard for such materials. Over several sessions, the organizers will consult experts, survey children and parents, develop story and visual concepts, and test drafts iteratively before finalizing and publishing the books. The seminar aims to empower children by helping them understand and communicate their feelings while staying safe.

to generate and design “age-appropriate”and attractive content for 6
to 12 year old urban children on personal safety and the importance of
understanding and articulating feelings.

EXPECTED OUTCOME
Illustrated Story Books - Children relish stories, they remember them
vividly and imparting information through stories could have a more
lasting impact on the child.
4. Stay Safe Kids | Seminar 1
Why am I choosing something for the child and parent equation over
the classroom setup?
- Parent consent and institution hierarchy
- Parent - Child communication lag
- Classroom material already exists
5. Stay Safe Kids | Seminar 1
Why is this material directed towards the child?
- Age appropriate content - ease in comprehension
- Understand, remember and recall
- Beneficial to empower the single child.
6. Stay Safe Kids | Seminar 1
Why focus on the importance of emotions then?
- Identifying changes in body when overcome
by different emotions.
- Being able to express and put into words
how a child is feeling gives them more control
over their lives.

SOME RESPONSES
In retrospect, what factors could have been different, that would have shielded you from being victimised?
Sex and sexuality education. If my parents were aware, and made me aware, I could have still suffered
through this, but would have come out of the trauma in a few years rather than waiting for 11 years.
From your own experience, if you had to talk to children on self protection, what key points would you focus
on?
I would not talk to children. I would first speak to parents. Because that’s where the real problem is.
Parents are not open about these horrors. Parents would have to open their minds and then alone can we
expect children to open their minds about child sexual abuse.
