1. Formal Proposal For Documentary
Topic
The topic of our documentary is dogs. We are going to look at why people own
dogs. We will be comparing the lives of working dogs and family pets. It will
include extras such as people’s favourite breeds and seeing what life is like and
there experience for dogs at kennels as well as visiting the RSPCA. Also where
showing the side of “dangerous dogs” and putting in that contrast between
beloved pets that have also been mistreated and deserve a second chance in
life.
Type of documentary
Our documentary will be mixed. Due to it including interviews, voice over’s,
video footage and archive material.
Style Of Documentary
This documentary is informal due to it being a family show. We see our
documentary more as a fun and relaxed show.
Channel and scheduling
Due to previous questionnaires we have decided to use Channel 4 as it is the
most popular. We have decided to hammock our documentary and place it in
between two well established programmes. We have decided to air our
documentary at 8:30pm due to it being after Location, Location, Location and
before Educating Yorkshire.
Target Audience
Due to our questionnaire we found results of a mixed range of ages. The ages
that answered the questionnaire were varied from young to old ages. This
means we will aim our documentary to families. Because of this the
documentary will not be explicit and will be before water shed.
2. Primary Research
The interviews are our primary research; we interviewed dog owners, dog
groomers, guide dog trainers and dog owners. We set up the mise-en-scene
with dog toys, pictures of dogs and things that relate to dogs.
Secondary Research
Our archive material will include dog magazines, dog posters and dog books.
From the internet showing people how loved they are on a wide range. We’re
also including news of dangerous dogs which we will include by recording
someone looking on a computer. We will also look at a Facebook group called
“Merseyside Mutts” which is a Facebook group that devotes their time to rehoming dogs.
Narrative Structure
Our documentary is going to be in non linear as the order as the documentary
is in all different time order. It will be multi-strand as we are filming different
people to do with their jobs including dogs and different dog owners. This
documentary will be will open as we will not be able to cover dogs on a very
wide basis.
Outline of content
This documentary will include working dogs such as guide dogs, pet owners
and facilities such as the RSPCA. There will be cutaways including dog
groomers, different breeds, dog clothes, pet owners, dog walkers and people
who dedicate their time to re-home dogs. The music will be an Indie genre and
possibly just instrumental. The content will hopefully also include police dogs
and kennels.
