2. Grids
• Grids are guidelines that journalists follow to help them
create a page layout. The grids can be simple or complex,
the simple grid could include 2-3 columns and the complex
grid containing lots more. Grids are also used to help set
the text and photographs neatly into the page. This helps
the journalists and the paper/magazine to have a clean and
simple look. There are three lots of terminology for grid
use:
• Grid – the overall structure of which you are working in.
• Grid Units – the area in which the text and photographs are
placed.
• Alleys – the areas of the grid which should remain empty.
