    • 7 Steps to Success: DEAR not SDASU
      Every Teacher is a Teacher of Reading
      Aim: To provide a learning environment in which literacy actively and openly contributes, across the curriculum, to enjoyment, learning and progress of all student’s regardless of their ability or first language.
      Aim: To develop each students reading for pleasure
      Aim: To practise reading
      Aim: To share the fun in reading
      Aim: To be inspired by reading
      Aim: To increase reading stamina
      Aim: To promote and increase the enjoyment and frequency of reading among College students
    • 7 Steps to Success: DEAR not SDASU
      Step One: Use DEAR Homepage at least once each cycle.
      (Why not work in pairs/clusters to use the DEAR support pages and plan collectively)
      Click Picture to watch short clip on where to find the DEAR Homepage and a quick glimpse at what you can find there!
    • 7 Steps to Success: DEAR not SDASU
      Step Two: Whole College have DEAR on same day
      Whole College Drops Everything And Reads.....
      Including Admin; Technicians.... And College Leaders!
      Get a whole ‘atmosphere’ going, allow for habit forming.
      This will also allow for: splitting groups by KS or Gender.
      Share a girlie book with just the girls, or a boyish book with just the lads.
      Or
      something nice and easy with KS3 and something ‘dangerous’ with KS4
    • 7 Steps to Success: DEAR not SDASU
      Step Three: Read Out Loud
      As a Tutor you can easily model reading.
      Have the DEAR Homepage extract on a screen so tutees can follow along and discover “Oh, that’s how you say that word”
      OR/AND
      Read a whole book over a term.
      –Your choice... Their choice?

      Step Five: Create a College Book Wall
      Find a Display area for creating a Book Wall which can include:
      Author profiles;
      Book reviews;
      Get caught Reading photos;
      Polls;
      Quotes;
      Themed by Genre;
      Front Cover Designs;
      Display run by different tutor group each month/term.
    • 7 Steps to Success: DEAR not SDASU
      Step Six: Accept your invitation to visit the MRC
      Okay, so you won’t all be able to spend time with visiting Authors like the top four borrowing Tutor groups did in June.
      But your tutor group will be invited to spend time browsing in the MRC.
      Many students complain that they don’t get enough time to just explore the books in the MRC.
      Taking time to choose a book right for them is half the battle.
      MRC Staff are on hand to offer suggestions for those tricky students!
