Machinima : Cheat Sheet (OCR Media Conference 2009)
1. Machinima Cheat Sheet
“Film-making in a real-time virtual 3d environment”
Machinima (a portmanteau of machine and cinema) is a method of storytelling and film-making
using a virtual 3d environment, often a computer game. Machinima movies are being made
using games as diverse as
• The Sims
• World of Warcraft
• Halo
• Grand Theft Auto
• Half-life
• The Movies
• Battlefield
• Unreal
• Little Big Planet
Additionally, dedicated tools have emerged which, whilst not computer games, use computer
game technology to provide a movie-making environment on your own computer. These
include
• Second Life (which is sort-of a game, but not really)
• Iclone (www.reallusion,com/iclone)
• Antics 3D (www.antics3d.com)
• Moviestorm (www.moviestorm.co.uk)
• ZenCub3d (www.zencub3d.com)
Machinima is fast (at least, compared to real-world movie-making), easy and often requires only
one person and one computer to make. There's lots of information available online:
• en.wikipedia.net/Machinima

There have also been a few books written about Machinima:
• 3D Game-Based Filmmaking: The Art of Machinima (Marino, 2004, ISBN-10 1932111859)
• Machinima (Morris/Kelland/Lloyd, 2005, ISBN-10 1592006507)
• Machinima For Dummies (Hancock/Ingram, 2007, ISBN-10 0470096918)
The presentation at today's conference was given by
• Matt Kelland, Founder & Creative Director of Short Fuze (the creators of Moviestorm)
• Johnnie Ingram, Product Manager at Short Fuze and co-author of Machinima For
Dummies
