But in just 50 years we have gained the technology to make equipment to first reach outer space, then touch the moon, then explore stars with advanced telescopes on Earth or the Hubble Space Telescope. And it didn't just didn't take technology to get us this far, but it took peoples ideas and it took men and women who had enough courage to go to space and do extremely dangerous jobs. < p >Space is the region above the Earth's atmosphere. It's name is space only because it is a huge space with many stars, planets and other things. Even though space sounds like it is almost completely empty, It has much more than the big things that are spread out thousands of lightyears away. There are small micro asteroids and there is dust and gases all over. Therefore space is only called space because it looks like it. < p >We consider space starting at an altitude of 45,000 feet. Above this altitude, it requires a sealed, pressurized suit or cabin for breathing. Winged, airbreathing jet aircraft can operate at sustained altitudes of a little more than 80,000 feet. Balloons have risen to about 150,000 feet. Rocket-powered aircraft, not requiring oxygen from the air, have ascended to more than 354,000 feet, or some 67 miles, a level above 99 percent of the atmosphere. < p >At an altitude of about 100 miles, satellites can orbit the Earth. Here, true space may be said to begin. The farther regions of space are described by the bodies that limit them. Cislunar space is the area between the Earth and the moon. Interplanetary space is between the sun and the planets of the solar system. Interstellar space is between the stars of a galaxy. Intergalactic space is between the myriad galaxies of the universe. < p >By: Scott Deming< /font > < center >< img src="silverplanet.gif" width="300">< /center > < /body > < /html > Students used Notepad and HTML programming to create their own web page.
