Faye's physics holiday project was a kaleidoscope made from a CD box, colorful scraps, black paper, scissors, a sharp knife, and adhesive tape. The instructions were to cut the CD box into rectangles, cut the rectangles into triangular prisms, cover the prisms with black paper, attach a pencil to one edge to act as the viewing end, and glue colorful scraps onto the inside to create symmetrical patterns when viewed through the pencil. The kaleidoscope works using the principle that images created by plane mirrors are always the same size as the object, the same distance behind the mirror as the object is in front, and laterally inverted but upright.
