Catholic Iconography

3. This image is of Jesus Christ on the cross being
crucified alongside him is two other convicted
criminals. The colours in the background are generally
dark which suggests looniness and makes it scary.
There are two lightning strikes, each above the
convicts. The sun is in the centre right behind Jesus,
which means the sun is setting and the day is coming
to an end. Jesus is in the centre of the image which
shows there is a fair bit of distance between where the
“photo was taken”. The foreground is dark which
makes us focus on the top half of the image.
4. The light behind Jesus shows purity and remarks that
Jesus is the light of the world. The light behind Jesus is
most likely the sun which represents a new beginning
and on either side of the sun there is lightning strikes
which is seen as evil. The foreground is darkened as
the earth is darkened by Jesus’s death. The sun is
setting so the day is coming to an end just like Jesus’s
life. Jesus not being in the foreground creates the effect
that he is distanced from us as in he is being taken
away from us just like he was removed from us for the
following three days.
5. Blessed virgin Mary with baby Jesus Christ
Theotokos Image

6. This image is of Blessed Mary holding baby
Jesus Christ with two angels hovering above
either side of them. In the picture Mary is
holding Jesus’s hand and holding him close to
her. Jesus is looking up to the angels and Mary.
While the angles are looking down on Jesus
and Mary, Mary is looking straight ahead. The
background colour is saffron gold which shows
happiness and joy. Mary is wearing her usual
blue garment which shows truth and peace.
There is a golden halo around Jesus’s head
which shows he is a holy figure.
7. Mary holding baby Jesus is representing that
Mary is God and we are baby Jesus in that we
are all still young and have a lot to learn. The
two angles show that we all have an angel
watching over us and protecting us. Mary
holding Jesus’s hand shows that God is in
contact with us all the time and protects us.
Mary looking straight head could mean she is
looking into the future just like God does.
While Jesus is looking up which shows we all
look up to God.
9. This is an image of The Holy Spirit which is three
persons in one God. In the picture is Jesus Christ
on the left hold a cross and on the right God
waving. Above them in the sky a dove which is
the Holy Spirit. God and Jesus are sitting on top
of a cloud with the sun above them. In the
background is a clear blue sky with the then sun.
The dove is flying right in the middle of then with
the sun’s rays shooting out. There is a round halo
behind Jesus while behind God there is a
triangular halo.
10. God waving his hand shows he welcomes us to
heaven. The clouds around them shows us they
are in heaven and on top of the world as they are
sitting on the clouds. The blue sky behind them
represents happiness and peace. The sun’s rays
are flowing out just like God’s love does, it also
shows that it is a happy sunny day. The triangular
halo represents The Holy Spirit with each three
points being a different person with all three
persons making up the triangle. Jesus is holding
his cross which reminds us of all the suffering he
endured for us.
