Simple Stimulus Paper
As stated by Terry stimulus learning is a very natural form of learning that
incorporates adaptation and customization (Terry, 2009). Interaction with a
stimulus can influence our conduct and behavior even if the stimulus has no
importance for a person. Major part of our behavior is acquired and shaped by
being affected from a stimulus. Learning is a process which enhances your
knowledge, your probable behaviors, or your talents. Learning can shape your
thoughts, your choices, your competence to accomplish your task, and the
standard of your relationships. This analysis will explain habituation or adaptation,
components that influence intuitive learning and the results of stimulus learning.
Discuss the basis of habituation/adaptation
The American Heritage Dictionary describes habituation according to psychology
as a type of non associative learning marked by a fall in responsiveness upon
regular exposure to a stimulus. It is an action repeated again and again in
response to a particular scenario. One way we educate ourselves is by duplication
of a particular response spread over a number of circumstances (Carducci, 2002).
Continual repetition of an action gives us more insight about it. Consequently when
we come across a stimulus (action, or situation that evokes or generates a
response), no matter what the situation might be, we tend to demonstrate the
behavior.
Habituation happens in children of very young age when they are being taught a
new idea or in grownups suffering from amnesia when required to practice a lost
skill. Schools employ habituation for conducting the spelling tests and teaching new
math concepts. For instance, students are provided with the series of words, and
then every day they rewrite the words [five times each], learn the description of
each word, use the words in sentences of their own, and then they are tested on
the spelling of all those words on Friday. An individual suffering from amnesia that
had lost the skill and ability of driving can recover from his condition and learn the
skill again through habituation.
Habituation is a simple and natural process, where people acclimatize with their
situation. Basically it is “getting acquainted with something.”
Habituation can be utilized to tackle particular anxiety-provoking issues by making
someone familiar with a feared situation through regular exposure. For instance if
an individual has a fear of public speaking, constant repetition of such experience
and exposure can
