4. An Introduction to Oman Dental College
The face of education is changing rapidly in Oman. Dr. P Mohamed Ali, a multi-faceted
businessman spearheaded the education revolution in Oman. With his vision to fulfill
the dreams of many aspiring Dentists, Dr P Mohamed Ali of Galfar established the
Oman Dental College. AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences (ABSMIDS), a unit
of NITTE Education, is affiliated to Oman Dental College. ABSMIDS is held in high esteem
in India & Internationally. Oman Dental College is one of its kinds in the Sultanate of
Oman. The academic year 2006 saw admission of first batch of students. Subsequently, it
is growing exponentially.
In order to achieve the envisioned future for both the Higher Educational & Healthcare
sectors in Oman, Oman Dental College strives incessantly. The blend of Oman Dental
College’s endless efforts, state of the art infrastructure, & hospitals benefit both students
& citizens. The institution consists outpatient dental clinic, X-ray facilities, and
laboratories, a Central Sterile Supply Department, an operating theatre and a research
centre. These facilities are well equipped as per the industry standards with the
sophisticated technology. Outpatient dental facilities have made the quality dental care
easily accessible to the general public in the Sultanate, at affordable rates.
The college offers a graduate program in Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS). The
Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) Program is divided into BDS I, BDS II, BDS III, & BDS IV &
V.

5. BDS I deals with medical science subjects like Biochemistry, General Anatomy, Histology &
Physiology. Head & Neck Anatomy, Embryology, Genetics, & Biostatistics are also included. BDS
II focuses on General Pathology & Microbiology, Pharmacology, Oral biology, Dental biomaterials
science, & Dental theory. Clinical skills are enhanced with the practice on patient stimulators in the
laboratory. BDS III comprises of students treating patients under the guidance of superiors. It is at this
phase students put the theoretical knowledge in to practice. Students learn the know-how of the
profession. BDS IV & V expose students to perform complex methods of treatment. This exposure
prepares the students for independent dental practice. The Clinical element plays a pivotal role in the
dental training. At Oman Dental College, a great emphasis is laid on acquiring & developing sound
professional clinical skills while learning the BDS program. The library is filled with all relevant &
professional dentistry books, dental & oral journals & selects general reading material. The librarian
staff is trained & highly efficient.
Oman Dental College has a set of top notch professional faculties to train & guide the aspiring dentists.
Its specially designed professional programs are molded as per the industry standards, which hone the
students & prepare them to face the professional world. One of the provisions to strengthen the
efficiency of the BDS program for students is Student Affairs Registry (SAR). SAR oversees enrolment,
teaching & examinations schedule. Posting notices on the bulletin boards, updating the website &
sending mails are the functions of SAR. In simple words, SAR is a point of contact. Finding reasonable
accommodation with the help of SAR is among many features of Oman Dental College. It also provides
counseling services; students are to contact the counseling mentor once a year. Student council is solely
dedicated to represent, encourage participation, & personal development of the students.
Dr. P Mohamed Ali with his knack to expand enterprises & vigorous efforts has built Oman
