The Middle Ages began after the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 AD. During this period, Hispania (modern Spain and Portugal) was invaded by Germanic tribes like the Suevi, Vandals, and Alans. The Visigoths later dominated most of the Peninsula and founded a kingdom based in Toledo, which lasted until the 8th century. They adopted Latin, Roman law, and Christianity from the previous Roman culture.
