Reducing Children's Fear of Visiting the Doctor
1.
2. Going to the doctor can be stressful
experience for parents and children alike. Even
when it is just for a routine check-up, a child’s
anxiety about medical visits can be quite
severe. Luckily, there are many things parents
can do to reduce a child’s fear.
The first priority should be choosing the right
doctor. If the doctor has a good rapport with
children, the child’s anxiety will be far less.
Remember, the child often sees the doctor
simply as a stranger. If the doctor is cold or
stern, he or she may appear to be a threat.
3. Fear of the unknown is also a concern for
children. Especially for children around the age
of two or three, their memories of previous
doctor’s visits will surface. They will remember
shots, exams, and any other procedures. To
help children, be honest with them about what
to expect from a doctor’s visit.
Never lie and say it will not hurt, but let them
know it will not hurt for long. Be patient and
comforting. A parent’s reassurance will help
most.
