SONEX are… As of Nov'09 the workgroup coordinator Pablo de Castro changed affiliation from Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) to Carlos III University Madrid, and Richard Jones (Symplectic Ltd) became a member of the group in Apr'10 replacing Jim Downing.

Scientific research practices regularly adopt new technologies and platforms in an effort to increase information timeliness, sharing and discoverability. There are many initiatives related to open data, open code, open access, open collections, composing the topic of Open Science in academia. Being open has two levels of meanings. The first is to make the data, code, sample collections and publications, etc. freely accessible online. The other is the annotation and connection between those resources to establish the provenance information for reproducible scientific research. In this paper we present our work on a web portal for the Deep Carbon Observatory (DCO) community. The DCO is a 10-year (2009-2019) initiative to intensify global attention and scientific effort in the burgeoning field of deep carbon science. Inspired by guiding questions such as “how much carbon does Earth contain?”, “where is it?” and “what can deep carbon tell us about origins?” more than 1000 scientists across the world are actively participating in the DCO community. The DCO web portal is a research collaboration website developed to keep track of all researchers, organizations, instruments, field sites, and research outputs related to the DCO community. We intend for the DCO web portal to be a knowledge portal - adopting state-of-the-art semantic technologies to support various stages of the scientific process within and beyond the DCO community.

The European Open Science Cloud - Cloud Expo Europe 2016

H2020 BigDataEurope is a flagship project of the European Union's Horizon 2020 framework programme for research and innovation. In this talk we present the Docker-based BigDataEurope platform, which integrates a variety of Big Data processing components such as Hive, Cassandra, Apache Flink and Spark. Particularly supporting the variety dimension of Big Data, it adds a semantic data processing layer, which allows to ingest, map, transform and exploit semantically enriched data. In this talk, we will present the innovative technical architecture as well as applications of the BigDataEurope platform for life sciences (OpenPhacts), mobility, food & agriculture as well as industrial analytics (predictive maintenance). We demonstrate how societal value can be generated by Big Data analytics, e.g. making transportation networks more efficient or facilitating drug research.

Pecha Kucha presentation by the Sonex workgroup at the Repository Fringe 2010 (Edinburgh, Sep 3rd, 2010). The JISC-supported Scholarly Output Notification and Exchange (SONEX) workgroup was established at the International Repositories Workshop (Amsterdam, Mar'09) for analysing and dealing with interoperability issues underlying strategies for populating repositories. After JISC Deposit call for funding deposit-related projects was released last March, the role of the SONEX workgroup widened for including coordination and eventual support for resulting projects, as well as surveillance of deposit-related initiatives worldwide. Strategies for handling interoperability issues in the repository environment along SONEX rst year of work are summarized in this paper, along with future lines of work for the SONEX initiative.

The main focus of Science Demonstrator sessions is to provide feedback to the EOSC community on the first experience of science demonstrators in the practical use of the emerging EOSC ecosystem. Each panel will consist of a representative of a Science Demonstrator that will provide an overview of their experiences in the use of emerging EOSC services. These sessions will help members of the scientific communities understanding the current state of maturity of the EOSC ecosystem and what is obtainable in a field of scientific research. It is also valuable to prospective Service Providers who wish to discover what are the challenges and opportunities that user communities might have to deal with, as a result of the adoption of their services. This session will focus on Social and Earth Sciences.

The European Open Science Cloud

This year the "hot topic" of the European Association of Remote Sensing Companies (EARSC) Annual General Meeting was the creation of a Marketplace Alliance for Earth Observation Services (MAEOS). Recently, the EARSC has released a position paper around the development of a European Marketplace for EO services as a leverage for the exploitation of Copernicus data and services alongside commercial offerings. In this presentation all the insights and lessons learnt on marketplaces for cloud services.

This 'ORCID iDs and Open Access' presentation was delivered Oct 24th, 2014 as part of the Open Access Week 2014 activities organised by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT). Global Standards for System Interoperability: CERIF

ORCID presentation for the Portuguese research information management community at the Jornadas FCT-FCCN in Évora. Following the FCT initiative for ensuring researchers in Portugal.register with ORCID, new opportunities are arising for integrating ORCID into different research information systems in the country. The presentation shows the current state of ORCID and the integration initiatives taking place for different stakeholders such as funders, publishers or institutions.

A Holistic Approach to Institutional ORCID Implementation

This presentation on CRIS/IR integration and/or interoperability was delivered within the Open Access Week 2013 events organised by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) and the Spanish University Library Network (REBIUN). It addresses the ever growing integration of institutional CRIS systems and repositories into a single research information management workflow -- also known by other name as "repository embedding". A number of examples are provided for this platform integration in the UK and Spain, and emphasis is placed on the benefits that such interoperability offers for increasing the effectivity in collecting and exposing institutional Open Access contents. A final reflection is added on what steps need to be taken next in order to promote a harmonised approach to research information exchange across institutions.

CRIS and Institutional Repository Integration: Standardising Open Access

ePoster presented at the Berlin10 Open Access Conference (Stellenbosch, South Africa, Nov 7-8, 2012). Abstract: The UK RepositoryNet+ Project (RepNet) has been funded by the JISC (UK Joint Information Systems Committee) to design, develop and implement a whole range of new services for the UK Institutional Repository (IR) Network, including support for new Open Access publishing models for research papers. Following its launch at the Open Repositories 2012 Conference (OR12) last July, the RepNet is now rolling out initial Wave 1 services and specifying Wave 2 services which together will represent a comprehensive suite of tools to support Open Access publishing through the Institutional Repository network developed by JISC. The RepNet Project, being run through the EDINA National Data Centre in Edinburgh, has integrated existing components and services and will be providing new ones to fill in the needs identified through a gap analysis process. Some preliminary needs analysis has already been held with different stakeholders involved in Open Access publishing – such as funders, repository managers and STM publishers. This design phase is will be followed by a first RepNet dissemination programme for repository managers and other members of the Open Access community, with a series of events to be held in order to promote discussion and collect feedback. This poster will show the background to the funding of the project, the methodology followed to map the academic publishing landscape and establish user requirements, the process followed to develop the components catalogue, and the new services for the UK repository network the project aims to develop within its project funding through July 2013.

Se describen en ella los intentos realizados hasta el momento para abordar la identificación universal de autores de trabajos de investigación, el modo en que ORCID pretende abordar el problema y las ventajas que la adopción de ORCID puede conllevar para autores individuales e instituciones. Finalmente se examinan las posibilidades de un modelo de adopción de ORCID a escala nacional y los pasos previos que en este sentido están dando algunos países.

Presentation for ORCID webinar for the Portuguese BAD series (11 Dec 2012)

Durante el International Repositories Workshop celebrado en Amsterdam en marzo de 2009 se señaló la urgente necesidad de incrementar los contenidos almacenados en los repositorios institucionales. Bien a través de la promoción de iniciativas para la transferencia automática de contenidos desde los editores o mediante el desarrollo de la interoperabilidad entre los sistemas de información sobre investigación o Current Research Information Systems (CRIS) y los repositorios institucionales, era preciso fomentar estrategias que permitieran automatizar la incorporación de contenidos. El grupo de trabajo SONEX (Scholarly Output Notification and Exchange), financiado por el JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee), se estableció entonces para analizar las cuestiones relacionadas con la interoperabilidad de repositorios y contribuir a la implementación de las soluciones detectadas. Tras la publicación el pasado marzo de 2010 por parte del JISC de la convocatoria para financiar proyectos relacionados con el depósito de contenidos en los repositorios del Reino Unido, el papel del grupo SONEX se amplió para incluir la colaboración y el apoyo a los proyectos seleccionados en dicha convocatoria. En esta presentación se resume el marco de interoperabilidad de repositorios analizado por SONEX a lo largo del último año y se mencionan algunas iniciativas en la materia que vienen desarrollándose en diversos repositorios españoles.
