The Sayings used are taken from
โSayings of The Buddhaโ by Ven. Dr. K Sri Dhammananda
3. 3
โBy mind the world is led, by the mind the world is
drawn. And all men own the sovereignty of mind.โ
KNOWING that
the Mind directs
states of
Suffering or
Happiness,
wise ones
would exert
great effort to
train the mind
with
mindfulness.
4. 4
โIn this world hatred can never be appeased by
hatred. Hatred can only be appeased by love.
This is the eternal law.โ
Anger and Hatred
are mental
poisons that
cause oneself and
others lots
of pain.
We need to
ardently practice
Metta or loving-
kindness again
and again.
5. 5
โThousands of candles can be lit from a single candle,
and the life of the candle will not be shortened.
Happiness never decreases by being shared.โ
Of all Gifts the
Greatest Gift is
the Sublime
Dhamma.
Learning and
sharing the
Dhamma will
lessen Dukkha.
6. 6
โFools wait for a lucky day,
but everyday is a lucky day
for an industrious man.โ
It is through wise and diligent practice of Righteous Ways
that we will have greater happiness,
peace and brighter days.
7. 7
โSpeak the truth not untruth,
Say what is pleasant, not unpleasant;
Speak what is true, not false.
Speak only words that do not bring remorse nor hurt another.
That is good speech indeed.โ
When we practice
NO Lying, NO
Slander, NO Harsh
Words and
NO Gossip,
it is meritorious as
we will lessen pain
and any hardship.
8. 8
Though one should conquer a million men in battlefield,
yet indeed, he is the noblest victor
who has conquered himself.
One who strives
in the Dhamma
to conquer
Loba, Dosa
and Moha,
is noble, he is
on the way to
cross Samsara
to end Dukkha.
9. 9
โWheresoever fear arises, it arises in the mind
of the fool, not in that of the wise man.โ
When Wisdom
arises through
the practice of
The Noble 8-Fold
Way,
happiness and
peace fills the
mind and worry
or fear will fade
away.
10. 10
โWhen your physical body is sick,
do not allow your mind also to be sick.โ
It is inevitable
that the body
will have
physical
suffering.
However the
cultivated mind
can free itself
from any
sorrowing.
11. 11
โAccording to the seed thatโs sown
So is the fruit you reap there from.
The doer of good will gather good,
The doer of evil, evil reapsโ
All are subjected
to the Law of
Kamma-Vipaka.
Good begets
Good, Bad Begets
Bad โฆstrive to end
all Dukkha.
12. 12
The fault of others is easily seen; but oneโs own is
hard to see. Like chaff one winnows otherโs faults;
but oneโs own one conceals
as a crafty fowler disguises himself.
Rather than
judging another
personโs character,
one should strive
first to improve
himself, to be
better.
13. 13
โThe wise are controlled in deed, controlled in words,
controlled in thoughts, verily, they are fully controlled.โ
Have sense
restraint to avoid
any evil action of
the mind, speech
and body.
In this way, we train
well our Sila to
prevent states of
Dukkha or misery.
14. 14
โBy effort, earnestness, discipline, and self-control let
the wise man make for himself an island which no
flood can overwhelm.โ
With strong
conviction, effort
diligence, discipline
and sense restraint,
the wise man trains
and protects his
mind from any
defilement or taint.
15. 15
โOf paths the Eightfold Path is the best;
of truths the Four Words (Noble Truths);
Detachment is the best of states.โ
Of The 4 Noble
Truths we must
strive to have a
greater
understanding.
Then we will cut our
craving and
attaching โฆthe root
cause of suffering.
16. 16
Do not commit
wrongful actions. Do
not dwell in
negligence. Do not
embrace false views.
So the world (i.e.
Samsara, the cycle
of existence and
continuity)
is not prolonged.
We must be alert, careful, heedful and mindful
not to do a deed thatโs wrongful or unskillful.
Weโll then not fall into states that are sorrowful.
17. 17
The End
Contemplating most mindfully upon the Wordsof
Truth
fromTheBuddha,
may we follow TheNoble 8-Fold Path diligently to
end Dukkha.
