Math has evolved over thousands of years, starting with basic counting and arithmetic developed by early civilizations. In the 16th-17th centuries, important advances were made including decimals, exponents, logarithms, analytic geometry, and calculus. Modern mathematics grew out of these discoveries and continues to be applied to many areas of science, engineering, and technology.
