Nicaragua has been a Democratic Republic
since 1990. The first president was Violeta
Chamorro, and the current president is
Enrique Bolaños Geyer.
Declared independence from Spain in 1821
and was officially considered independent in
1850.
Anyone 16 or older can vote.

Holding elections in November
The left-wing Sandinista National
Liberation Front political party (FSLN) has
contracted alliances with several political
forces it has been fighting for decades.
Some feel that this move could turn out to
be a bad move.
10. Economy
Very active and changing, rapidly gaining
economic importance.
Main exports: coffee, seafood, beef, sugar,
industrial goods, gold, bananas, and
sesame.
Currency: Nicaraguan Cordoba Oro
(equivalent to a little more than 5 cents in
American money)
11. Business hours
• Business conventions, from an American
point of view, are less formal.
• Punctuality is not always observed.
• The business lunch time is between noon and
2:00.
• Private businesses and government offices
generally close for the week before Easter
Sunday, and between Christmas and New
Year’s.

due to the coastlines on

increasingly popular in
