resources that are available to you. We are here

Students

5. Fernwood School Rules:

3. I am a learner.
When your class
comes to the library,
the three school rules
apply. Library specific
rules are posted.

6. At the end of library, teachers will receive a class report.

7. Searching for Books
To find out if we have a book at our library, you can ask us,
or you can look it up in your classroom (or even from home).

8. Here’s how:
● Go to library.nsd.org
● Click on Fernwood Elementary
● Then click on the catalog tab and you will be able to start
your search.

9. Checking out Books
To check out a book, you can ask us to help, or you can
check out your own books.

10. Here’s how:
● Go to the Circulation desk computer in the library. On the computer, make
sure the following three things are shown as in the diagram below: 1.
Circulation 2. Check out and 3. To patron

11. ● Next, find the binder and open it up the Staff tab
● Using the scanner, scan the barcode underneath your
name, and look up at the computer to make sure your
account pops up.
● Then, scan the barcodes of all of the books you are
checking out. (Remember the barcodes are on the
outside back covers. Make sure they are the district
barcodes and not the manufacturer’s barcodes.)
● Once you’ve scanned the last book, you’re done! You
don’t need to close out or save. You’re all set!

12. Curriculum Needs
Do you need library books to support your
curriculum?

13. We are happy to research and select a single book, or a collection
of books, to support your instructional needs. Here are some tips
to help this process go smoothly:
● Please send us an email. It’s okay to mention your needs in passing, but in
addition, an email will ensure we don’t forget!
● In your email, please include as much of the following as possible: topic,
genre, reading level, fiction/nonfiction, and NUMBER OF BOOKS YOU
NEED.
● Please give at least three school days notice if you are requesting a
collection of books.

14. Subscription Research Databases
Did you know about our district’s Subscription Research
Databases?
Many teachers are not aware of this wonderful resource. Before you have your
students “Google it”, consider whether a database would work for the research.
We pay for these services to ensure quality information. They have high ranks in
credibility, accuracy, and reliability. The research databases can be accessed
from any computer and students can always login from home.

World Book Online
Online research tools that include encyclopedia
articles, primary source collections, etc.

Online research tools about every country and
region of the world.

SIRS Discover
A collection of research tools on topics such as
arts, health, history, language arts, math,
people, science, social studies, sports,
technology. This also includes nonfiction books,
current events and animal facts.

Teaching students to use technology

17. Digital Citizenship in the library
● This year all students in grades 1 through 6 will be taught
at least two digital citizenship lessons in the library.
● These lessons often take more than one library session.
● Librarians are using the common sense media
curriculum
