ENGLISH:
Presented by Iouri Belooussov at the conference «Satellite TV: Strategies and risks of the Ukrainian market» (2013, Kyiv, Ukraine), this presentation (in Russian) deals with the latest changes in the standardization of satellite communication technology and the effects on the satcom industry.
In this presentation you find:
- what DVB-S2 Extensions are about,
- the outcome of real tests of the new technology,
- survey results of a world-wide industry survey conducted by Newtec (with >700 participants from > 400 companies),
- migration scenarios of today’s contribution and distribution networks, to the new generation satcom DVB-S2 technology

Editor's Notes
Our industry is in (r)evolutionAnalogy with car industry(which is an industry that changed the world as well)More miles per gallon: better efficiency technologies allow more throughput in the same bandwidth which has positive effects on the OPEX (more bits through the hertz)Higher Speeds: new technologies and high throughput satellites allow even more data to be passed through the satellite linkMore traffic asks for wider lanes: high throughput satellites have dropped the cost per bit and allow for more throughput with rates increasing dramatically over the last couple of yearsKeep traffic within regulations and remove accidental and intentional ghost drivers: Carrier ID will help to identify & solve accidental and intentional interference in order to have more reliable communications. The good thing a about Carrier ID is that there is a standard in DVB now as of Feb 28th 2013 !These changes in the satellite industry are the drivers for the DVB organisation to adapt their standards.Newtec plays a leading role in the definition and development of the new satellite standards and leads the changes in the industryTiming for the standardisation is planned as followsWideband and Carrier ID for End 2012Extensions to the DVB-S2 standard for mid 2013 Something is happeningChange never occurred so rapidly in our satellite industry as todayHigh Throughput Satellites (HTS) and the introduction of efficiency technologies have changed the gameThe amount of available capacity in the sky in terms of bandwidth has never been so big and will expand immensely in the upcoming years thanks to HTSAlthough the competition from fibre is immense, satellite still has a life next to terrestrial communication solutions. Mainly as back-up, in areas with scarce terrestrial connectivity or when large crowds/populations need to receive the same information at the same time (broadcast)This year has been very exiting for Newtec with the introduction of new products and breakthrough technologies. With more to come in the next months.
As can be seen the gain of S2 Ext over DVB-S2 varies between 0% and 30% depending on the C/NAt the top the 64APSK brings most gains as there is no equivalent modcod at those high C/NAt the lower end of the efficiency curve the gain is highest where DVB-S2 has large gaps between modcods.Remark that Shannon limit is applicable to linear operation. There, the improvements in the future are limited to 5% (assuming 0% roll-off) and maybe one dB more in efficiency. For non-linear operation, the Shannon limit does not count, but in this case pre-distortion is a key technology to increase throughput.
As can be seen the gain of S2 Ext over DVB-S2 varies between 0% and 30% depending on the C/NAt the top the 64APSK brings most gains as there is no equivalent modcod at those high C/NAt the lower end of the efficiency curve the gain is highest where DVB-S2 has large gaps between modcods. In the middle area of C/N, one can see higher granularity benefitting distribution applications, but also trunking w
CCT is likely to be adapted in the DVB-Sx standard. Smaller RO’s may not be in the new Sx, that is still open
The new Sx Standard will improve operation in the low C/N area (adding spreading and lower modulation schemes), and also in the high C/N area’s adding 128 and 256 APSK.The MODCODS as depicted here may end up in the DVB-Sx standard, be it with small variations. Framing of DVB-Sx will not be backwards compatible with DVBS/S2 framing, so the differences are not only related to the MODCODS but also the framing. There is no hard requirement for receivers / demods to support the former DVB-S/S2, but it is highly recommended. Newtec demods will be switchable between operation in S2 Extensions and DVB-S2 as an example
So why do we need Standardization? In the satellite industry there will always be a field of tension between open standards and proprietary technologies.Although in the short term proprietary technologies might be the best option to acquire quick revenues, in the long run the availability of open standards will benefit the entiresatellite industry for the following reasons:• Open standards create an eco-system: companies start from common building blocks to develop new solutions• Open standards reduce the barrier for entry forcompanies to develop new solutions for satellitecommunications• Open standards create an economy of scale thatallows a reduction in the cost of equipment (cheaper chipsets) andincreases the profitability of the industry• Open standards avoid vendor lock-in and allowmultiple vendors to enter the network, lowering theoverall risk of high pricing, companies going bankruptor non-availability of spare parts• Open standards increase the quality of products asthe technical implementation is supported by multiple companies.• Open Standards allow for interoperability betweendifferent government, NGOs and commercialorganizations increasing the effectiveness ofoperations in the field.
“No such thing as a closed network”
Surprising result ! That is why we made SW upgrades on old and new products to the new standard or parts thereof
Depends on Installed base of receivers. Contribution networks in broadcast will transition faster, but also primary distributionSat Ops have immediate ROI
Benefits need to compensate for capex. The more receivers installed, the higher the capex.. Expectations on new standard are set highRemark that the gains of 10%-20% will also facilitate migration in distribution and even DTH projects. S2 extensions is applicable to DTH as soon as silicon will exist. That is expected in the course of the next 12-24 months
High need to add more channels in BroadcastSP’s prefer to attract new customers
So far, the S2 extensions are all good news. But what are the concerns and barriers ?
Calculated valuesAssumes reveiver performance @5% RO is optimalIf one increases the total symbolrate used in the transponder, the amount of power used will be increased. In case the IBO/OBO needs to be maintained, the power will need to be the same, so the power per carrier will decrease. It will be decreased by 10*log(1.2/1.05) = 0.58 dB So the Es/No of the received carriers will be reduced by 0.58 dB which will decrease the availability. In case the same total power needs to be maintained and the availability cannot be reduced, the modcod will need to be lowered. So in this case 16APSK 4/5 will need to be used (16APSK 5/6 requires 12.1 dB, 16APSK 4/5 requires 11.5 dB nicely the 0.6 dB that we need to give in).Remark : Equalink does not give benefits in a multi-carrier transponder, since the transponder is not saturated!
Use-Case Distribution – real measured values on Newtec reference demodulator=================================================Single carrier36MHz Transponder, saturatedDVB-S or DVB-S2 modulationLinear Equalink gains on system level up to 1,5 dB. Gains of pre-distortion biggest on receivers with bad or no equalizer. Gains on recent S2 receivers may be small due to the good equalizer on modern chips(remark that non-linear equalink only benefits in 16APSK (+1dB) and 32 APSK (+2dB) systems but again in single carrier/saturated transponder!. In this scenario there are always gains)The positive impact of Equalink increases as the carrier gets more in the edges of the transponder (using CCT)Distribution modcods used (<=8PSK)Situation A : Starting pointSituation B : Reducing RO to 25% results in increased bitrate, but loss of link margin due to power reduction 10*log(1,35/1,25) =0,35dB (and therefore availability)Situation C : Restore the availability to the one in situation A by reducing the modcod, and further decreasing roll-off. Situation : Starting pointSituation E : Reduce roll-off and modcod and increase SR slightly, results in 0,4% (35 hours/Yr) outage instead of 0,7% (61 hours/yr)Equalink gains – Linear
