Editor's Notes
WHAT DO WE MEAN BY "PARKS INDUSTRY"? The parks industry is a term for the range of organisations which are engaged in the management of parks and the structures, systems, goods and services which flow around and through parks. At the heart of the industry lie the organisations with the responsibility for management and stewardship of parks and the social, commercial, environmental an cultural assets they contain. These include government local, regional, state and federal, community, non-government and commercial organisations. They vary in size and are influenced by different organisational cultures. What do they have in common? A similar set of values. They all have to strike balances between protection, preservation, conservation, recreation, leisure, tourism, contribution to social health, interpretation/support of cultural values and sustainable development. While they all have a different value mix or balance, the value set provides a common industry framework and, despite their differences, they all sit along a continuum of different park types which reflects these values. Clarke & Watkinson 2007. Despite these common values the industry does not have a history of functioning as a cohesive group with shared concerns. For example, the differences between urban parks and protected areas have been focused on rather than the similarities. Even agencies with common structures such as protected area agencies have often worked independently with limited sharing of knowledge and organisational practice. The inception of Parks Forum and its growth in recent years reflects a new focus for the industry. There is a better understanding of the need to work together more, and a willingness to do so. An increasing number of local government and urban park agencies are seeing the importance of engagement across the spectrum of parks management and are joining regional, state and federal agencies in becoming members to build links, networks and common policy. We also have our first Indigenous Protected Area member.
