3. Summary The Danish people lived in peace. Then this horrifying monster came about terrorizing the people. The people had no defense against this huge strong monster. Section Significance It goes to explain how Grendel goes around eating and destroying things and the Danish people can’t stop him. This section explains why Beowulf later came to help the Danish people. Anglo-Saxons Beliefs This shows how the Anglo-Saxons believed in creatures we see as a myth.
4. The Coming of Beowulf Characters Beowulf- A mighty Geat with superhuman powers Hrothgars Lieutenant- Greats Beowulf when their boat meets the Danes’ shore and escorts him to Hrothgar. Summary Beowulf hears tales of the destruction wrought by Grendel, he decides to travel to the land of the Danes and help Hrothgar defeat the demon. He voyages across the sea with fourteen of his bravest warriors until he reaches Hrothgar’s kingdom Beowulf explains that he is the son of Ecgtheow and owes his loyalty to Hygelac. He says that he has heard about the monster terrorizing the Danes and has come to help Hrothgar.
5. The coming of Beowulf Section Significance This section tells why Beowulf came to modern day Denmark. Anglo-Saxon Beliefs Beowulf was the superhuman or hero that the Anglo-Saxons believed in. He had super strength and never backed down from a fight. He was the strongest hero around.
6. The Battle With Grendel Characters Beowulf- finally faces Grendel and kills him. Grandel- was caught by surprise when he tried to feast on Beowulf. Summary Grendel travels to Herot thinking he would feast on some more Danish People. Taken by surprise he ends up fighting Grendel. Beowulf ripped Grendels arm off. This killed the monster.
7. The Battle With Grendel Section Significance This showed Beowulf’s abilities that enabled him to defeat Grendel. Also it reflected on the future problems he would have with another monster.(Grendel’s Mother) Anglo-Saxon Beliefs This showed how man could be more powerful then monster and how they believed in such a thing.
8. The Monsters Lair Characters Grendel’s Mother- Hrothgar explains another monster this one is female Hrothgar- Tells Beowulf there are more monsters Summary People have seen other monsters. Most people say the monsters have been seen around the Lake as if they live in it. Also there is a female the suspect to be Grendel’s Mother and she is stronger then Grendel.
