Both of us were big fans of ―Mumbai Noir‖ SATYA AB TAK CHHAPPAN RISK BLACK FRIDAY Both of us wished to tell a hardboiled crime-noir story set in India In a way that hasn’t been done before Both of us love Hindi Films and all the over the top full on entertainment paradigms it stands for We wished to go beyond superheroes and mythological comics Make the ―movie‖ we always wished to watch as a comic book

Initial Idea LA CONFIDENTIAL meets AB TAK CHHAPPAN by the way of ZANJEER Turn the idea of the ―heroic‖ protagonist on its head Set the story in India but infuse it with noir sensibilities and visuals Hong Kong Crime Flicks Not the kung-fu ones Classic John Woo + Johnnie To Make it ―HARD R‖ Violence Profanity Nudity ―The works‖ Pulpy and Trashy But Fun!

- 8. What happened? Spoke to an Indian ―Book‖ publisher B/W Cheaper to print Faster for Vivek to work with We decided to change the art style Indian pub dilly dallied for a year We felt it was too similar visually to Sin City We decided not to be concerned with cost and produce a unique look Going back to ―make the movie we wished to see‖.

- 10. Wash is awesome! Got the Signature Look Visuals breathed much more Vivek could selectively execute blurred B/G’s and crisp F/G items Used painted images with manipulated photos and 3D models We were ready to go shopping… err… pitching!

- 12. Colors are awesome-r! Archaia accepted Mumbai Confidential for publication as a creator owned title They wanted it in color We had no budget for coloring Vivek’s process for wash painting was already time consuming Coloring would’ve added more time What do we do? (Hint: One of us is a programmer!)
- 13. Algorithmic Coloring •Adapted a technique used to colorize old B/W movies •―Colorization by Optimization‖ – Google it. •Later found a GIMP plugin implementing the same technique •Enhanced it with some goodies like osmotic seepage, brush strokes etc. •Results were awesome: 5-10 pages colored / day
