2. What are ‘Health Calculators’?
• Health calculators assess a patient’s risk for a disease
• Based on scientific and clinical studies
• Dozens of calculators are available on the web and smart phones
• Risk is based on basic data about the patient (age, cholesterol,
BP, etc)
• Relatable
– Risk shown in simple terms – e.g. likelihood of developing a
disease in X years
– Physicians find health calculators to be great tools. Patients can
relate to a percentage risk of disease/outcome (e.g. 10% risk of
developing heart disease) much better than an arbitrary value (e.g.
a total cholesterol of 200).
3. Before eCalcs
• Health Calculators like Framingham Risk are widely used by
physicians
• Providers go to iPhone apps and websites for calculators
• Requires inefficient and error-prone data entry
• Health calculator score must by typed into the patient’s EHR chart
for documentation
4. With eCalcs
• Fully integrated into the EHR screens
– No searching online for Health Calculators
• Patient’s data is automatically brought into the calculator
– No manually data entry
– More time to spend interacting with the patient than typing into a
PC / smart phone
• Health Calculator score saved discretely in the EHR
– Ability to graph and flow scores over time, not to mention no
manual data entry of the patient’s score
