1. Children Old Age Pension
or Not?

Our culture for decades have embraced the idea that children are an investment. This investment
would mature at “Old Age” or at retirement. Hence being the ideal pension plan for retirement.
Because of this cultural position many individuals have proceeded to “have out their lot” and
neglected the necessity in financial planning and prudence of creating a pension plan.
These two decisions would create their own consequences. Having many children would prevent
you from saving or investing any extra money that you would have. And not having a pension
plan is not a wise idea, especially in these times.
However, the reality is many a times the total opposite. As grown adult children form their own
lives which is usually accompanied by a reasonable amount of financial responsibilities which
includes students’ loan, mortgages and motor vehicle expenses to name a few. This in itself
would place a hurdle in the way of children paying out returns to their parents’ who have solely
depended on them as their nest egg at retirement age.
It would be wise for us all to see these realities and plan accordingly to create our individual
safety net. This is a case that requires each tub to sit on its own bottom.
