IS PEER REVIEW STILL VALID?
The health research industrial complex is large. About
$200 billion dollars is spent globally, annually. This
research generates about 3 million manuscripts of
which about 50% are subsequently published in
approximately 25,000 journals. Even though many of
these publications have passed through the peer
review filter the vast majority of evidence indicates
that the quality of reporting of health research is
dismal. There are many reasons as to why the quality
of reporting is inadequate. Sub-optimal peer review
has been suggested as a likely factor. Focusing on
journal peer review this talk will discuss peer review,
some of the core competencies of peer reviewing and
what is known about the effectiveness of peer review.
