2. Curitiba has achieved a number of things, better described below:
1. Parks instead of canals to reduce flooding, as well as to make the city more
livable. There are so many that sheep are used to mow the lawn, as it is much
cheaper than machines.
2. Pedestrianization of the center.
3. Invent and build the Fast Bus Transportation network - a bus system that works
like a light rail but 10 times cheaper.
4. Give people bus tickets in exchange for junk.
5. Start a massive recycling system - all started by children.
3. The trash goes to a plant (self-constructed with
recycled materials) that employs people to
separate bottles, cans and plastics. Workers
are disabled, newly arrived immigrants,
alcoholics.
The citizens of Curitiba separate their garbage
in only two categories, organic and inorganic, to
be collected by two types of truck. Poor families
in slums, inaccessible to trucks, bring their trash
to other neighborhood centers, where they can
exchange it for bus tickets, eggs, milk, oranges
and potatoes, all bought from farms on the
outskirts.
