• Strong, active and passionate Open Data
community (PS, developers, researchers, lawyers,
journalists, professionals, etc.)
• Few municipalities or local government adopted
the model (some are really active)
• The central government did not have a national
strategy (no plan, no coordination, no standards)

• The national institute of statistic ISTAT released its data
using Creative Commons
• A big private company (ENEL) launched its Open Data
portal
• A new organization to advocate Open Data / wikitalia
(www.wikitalia.it)
• Several Public Administrations launched or are going to
launch their open data portals

• The Minister of Innovation and Public
Administration launched the Italian
Open Data Strategy

• It started as a community-based project to show
concretes examples in a country without an open
data strategy
• The 18/10/11 it all changed - a4i has become one
of the three components of the Italian Open Data
strategy

• Building useful, innovative projects based on italian
public data (not only open data)

Innovation
• app. 15K€ in technologies prizes from
private and public sponsors
• entries don’t have to be new (you can re-
use your good stuff)
• IP remain to authors

January 2012
• Awards ceremony: the 20 January

• To provoke the central administration that
was not adopting an open data strategy
• To gather the national community (and to
give some prizes to them)
• To support the creation of examples that
can show the value of open data
