Apps for Italy - a4i

1. A4i was originally a community project to showcase examples of open data use in Italy when there was no national strategy, but it is now one of three pillars of Italy's new Open Data strategy. 2. A4i is inviting all EU citizens to participate by building useful and innovative projects using Italian public data for cash and technology prizes. 3. The contest will run from November 20, 2011 to January 10, 2012, with an awards ceremony on January 20, 2012.

open data in Italy (yesterday) • Strong, active and passionate Open Data community (PS, developers, researchers, lawyers, journalists, professionals, etc.) • Few municipalities or local government adopted the model (some are really active) • The central government did not have a national strategy (no plan, no coordination, no standards) 3
open data in Italy (now) • The national institute of statistic ISTAT released its data using Creative Commons • A big private company (ENEL) launched its Open Data portal • A new organization to advocate Open Data / wikitalia (www.wikitalia.it) • Several Public Administrations launched or are going to launch their open data portals 4

apps4italy.it (a4i) • It started as a community-based project to show concretes examples in a country without an open data strategy • The 18/10/11 it all changed - a4i has become one of the three components of the Italian Open Data strategy • Great opportunity and huge challenge 6
a4i/what 1 • All EU citizens can participate (!!) • Building useful, innovative projects based on italian public data (not only open data) • Four main categories (growing): 1. Ideas 2. Apps 3. Visualization 4. Datasets It is very similar to Open Data Challenge 7
a4i/what 2 • 30K€ in cash prizes from the Minister of Innovation • app. 15K€ in technologies prizes from private and public sponsors • entries don’t have to be new (you can re- use your good stuff) • IP remain to authors 8
a4i/when • It will start the 20 of November 2011 • Deadline for submissions is 10 of January 2012 • Awards ceremony: the 20 January 2012 9
a4i/why • To provoke the central administration that was not adopting an open data strategy • To gather the national community (and to give some prizes to them) • To support the creation of examples that can show the value of open data 10
