Enigma Code
By the end of the lesson you will: Understand how enigma code is
used in the opening sequence of a film
Be able to discuss the effect of the enigma code in the opening of a
film.
In an opening sequence film makers ask a question to the audience,
which remains unanswered for the most of the film. This technique
is called the Enigma code and it is similar to a cliff-hanger.
We had to take notes on the opening sequence of Se7en, relating to
the enigma code.
In the opening sequence there are a lot of tight close ups, which only
shows the man’s fingers and his actions. The audience asks the
questions of whom this man is and why is he doing this?
In this opening sequence there are a lot of fast cuts and flickering
transitions. The flickers make the audience uncomfortable, but
intrigued. The fast cuts make sure the audience don’t look too long
at one thing. Also the sequence has a red filter, which makes it look
like bloody and grimy.
The sound matches the action. The soundtrack is metallic and
industrialised.
The mise en scene is quite dirty and grimy. It shows that the person
doesn’t care about his appearance. Also the sequence looks as if it is
set in a photography developing room and this creates feelings of
isolation and loneliness.
