2. Members (1 Cor. 12:13-22 and
Doctrine and Covenants 84:109-110)
Both 1 Corinthians 12 and Doctrine and
Covenants 84 teach the every member is needed
for the Church to function as a whole. Doctrine
and Covenants 84 says that every member needs
to perform the calling(s) they have been called to
so that the Church can function. 1 Corinthians
says that the body of the Church is made up of
all the individual members and that every
member is needed for the Church to function
properly.
3. The “more excellent” Gift of the Spirit
• Out of all the gifts of the Spirit Paul says that charity is
the “more excellent” gift.
“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels,
and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass,
or a tinkling cymbal.
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand
all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all
faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not
charity, I am nothing.
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and
though I give my body to be burned, and have not
charity, it profiteth me nothing.” ( 1 Corinthians 13:1–
3)
4. What is Charity? (1 Cor.13:1-8, 13)
CHARITY IS CHARITY IS NOT
The foundation of all the other gifts “envieth not”
of the Spirit
“suffereth long” “vaunteth not itself”
“is kind” “is not puffed up”
“rejoiceth in the truth” “rejoiceth not in inquity”
“Beareth all things” “is not easily provoke”
“Believeth all things” “does not behave unseemly”
“Hopeth all things” “seeketh not her own”
“Endureth all things” “never faileth”
“the greatest of [faith, hope, and “Thinketh no evil”
charity]”
5. What attribute Charity could I work
on?
An attribute of Charity that I could work on is
not being self centered but instead thinking of
others.
The way I plan to increase in this area is by
serving others and taking Moroni’s counsel in
Moroni 7:45-48 and praying for help to increase
this attribute.
6. Speaking in Tongues (1
Corinthians Chapter 14)
1 Corinthians 14 says that prophecy is better
than the gift of tongues. Paul says that the gift of
tongues is only profitable if there is someone
who can interpret for you. Paul also says that the
gift of tongues is for a sign to the unbelievers
and prophecy is for those who believe. If anyone
speaks in tongues it must with by two or three so
that one person can interpret an that all may
understand and be edified.
7. Speaking in Tongues (institute student
manual commentary for 1 Corinthians
14:26-40, (pgs. 296-97))
Joseph taught because the devil can speak in
tongues we should not speak in tongues without
understanding or an interpreter unless the person
that presides gives permission. The gift of
tongues is for the benefit of the Lord’s servants
to preach the gospel unto the unbelievers. The
purpose of the gift of tongues is to speak to
foreigners. If someone wants to display their
intelligence, let them speak in their own tongue.
If you want to reveal something, reveal it in your
own tongue.
