2. Laura Mulvey
• Laura Mulvey is female British theorist.
• She is known for her theory of ‘The Male
Gaze’
• This theory was created in 1975
• Mulvey assumed that in film and music
video audiences both have to 'view'
characters from a heterosexual male
perspective.
• She believed that women are presented in a
particular manner to satisfy men.
• In the films and videos, we mostly see that
males are always the protagonist and that
the target audience was focused at males.
3. The Concept of ‘The Male Gaze’
This is the concept of gaze which focuses on how
an audience views a video and analyse the way it
was presented by the people.
• It can be seen in 3 different ways:
• How men look at women
• How women look at themselves
• How women look at other women
This theory highlights that the males are superior
compared to the women. It allowed females to
have an idea of what a male’s view is like.
4. Features of ‘The Male Gaze’
• The use of camera angles tend to
focus on the females body, mainly
the curves which are based on the
man's reaction to the scenes
• This gave a seductive view of the
woman which revealed her beauty.
• It allows women to be the centre
of attention.
• The female view needs to be
experienced with the narrative
secondarily by the identification of
the male sex.
5. How this will benefit me whilst
creating my music video
• This will be beneficial in the process of creating
my music video as it will allow me to know the
codes and conventions of a music video.
• It will enable to know how to produce it and
what I should use to make my video look like.
• Although I will use a couple of my own ideas
which may subvert this theory, perhaps allowing
a female to be the main protagonist instead of a
male.
