Al Capone was a notorious American criminal who became famous as one of the most powerful crime bosses in Chicago during the 1920s. He dropped out of school at age 14 and joined a gang, earning the nickname "Scarface" after being cut in a fight. Capone later moved to Chicago and became the second in command of organized criminal activity, protecting his illegal businesses through bribery of police officers. Though he claimed to be in Florida, Capone was blamed for orchestrating the 1929 St. Valentine's Day Massacre. As a crime boss, Capone surrounded himself with bodyguards but also gained popularity for his charitable acts like opening soup kitchens for the poor.
