Why New Moms Won’t Ever Feel Lonely While Nursing
1. Why New Moms Won’t Ever Feel Lonely While
Nursing
Thank goodness for smart phones! Sure they’re helpful for finding your way when
you’re lost or keeping up with sports scores. But smart phones have an even more
important use: they keep new moms connected to the outside world when they
breastfeed.
How tedious the endless hours of nursing must have been in the days of yore when
there was nothing for moms to occupy themselves with in the wee hours of the
night. A book is nice but it doesn’t make you feel any less lonely.
The truth is breastfeeding can be a relaxing pastime. Picture yourself dressed in a
nursing top, rocking baby as she suckles you and caresses your arm with her little
chubby hand. That’s total mommy bliss.
But if your baby is one of those s-l-o-w eaters who takes an hour just to eat from one
side, you may start to feel a little anxious to get up. It’s also likely you’re longing to
feel like you aren’t the only one awake at 3:24 am on a Tuesday.
And that’s where your smart phone comes in. If you turn down the brightness so
that you’re looking at barely more than a glow, you can navigate the World Wide
Web with a few swipes of just one hand. Never again will you feel so disconnected
from the rest of the world as you rock and nurse, rock and nurse.
With all the apps out there devoted to new motherhood, there is plenty to read and
do to fill the time. You can chart the feedings, read up on milestones and track baby’s
growth. You can also read about and heed recall warnings issued on baby gear. Or
you can play games and fill out random quizzes about which TV character you are all
nightlong.
However, the best part about having the Internet at your fingertips – literally – is the
ability to commiserate with other women in your exact situation. You may be in luck
that your best friend happens to be nursing on the same schedule as you so you text
in real time.
If not though, there is a multitude of ways to feel linked in to the outside world. You
can easily scroll through your Facebook and Instagram feeds to see what fun your
single and childless friends are having. Then you can read all about the 10 Things
Nursing Moms Say/Do/Want/Needas you scroll through the plethora of Mommy
Blogs out there. Shop for a nursing top, type some one-handed emails and even
watch some YouTube videos quietly so you’re never again the one left asking, “what
do you mean ‘What does a fox say?’”
