USING THE LIBRARY TO
GET KINDLE BOOKS
Step-by-step instructions for the Huntington Beach
Public Library patron to follow to check out an e-book for
their Kindle.
Log in to HBPL Website
Select e-books/audio books from
the HBPL website home screen
Now you are on the OVERDRIVE
Screen. This is the service used
to deliver e-books to you.
Select the category to search
Search for book title you want
Click on the title you want, then
select the format you need.
The website should add the title
to your “wait-list” (note: you may
have to sign-on with library card
# and last 4 digits of phone #...)
The website will confirm your
reservation for the e-book.
When your e-book is available,
you will receive an e-mail from
the library. Click on the link.
You will be taken to the HBPL
website. Click on the e-book link
Click on “My Account”
Log in, entering your library card
number and last 4 digits of your
phone number.
Click on “My e-holds Waiting List”
You will see the books you have
reserved. Scroll to find the book
about which you were notified.
Select “add to e-cart”
Click to confirm the format of
book you are ordering: Kindle
Click on “Proceed to Checkout”
Select # of Days you need to
read the book: 7…14…or 21. Hit
Confirm Check Out
Select the box “Get for Kindle”
The last step took you to the
Amazon.com website. Now select
“Get Library Book”
You will receive a confirming
screen that indicates the file will
be downloaded.
If you download from your
computer to your Kindle, select
“Download Now”. SEE NEXT PAGE
You now have your library book
 If you have a Kindle Fire, all the previous steps can be
performed on your Kindle Fire, using the WIFI function
 To physically see your book on your Kindle Fire, you
must turn off the Kindle Fire and restart it.
 When the Amazon site sees that your Fire is on, it
automatically downloads the book.
 For other Kindle models that download from your
computer, you will need to use a USB cable between
your computer and your Kindle to complete the
download process.
To Manage your Amazon Account
 You may wish to manage your Amazon account library
books for several reasons:
 You have read the book and want to get it off your Kindle
screen.
 You want to return the book to the library so someone else
can enjoy it.
 You may like the book enough that you want to purchase it
from Amazon (Amazon LIKES that…)
 In these cases, the next screen will start to show you how
to manage your Amazon Account.
To manage your Amazon Account
you will have to log in again
Select the Manage Your Kindle
box. You will see a screen like the
one below.
Select the “ACTION” tab
The ACTION tab enables you to
 Deliver a book to your Kindle (or other e-readers that
you may have registered in your Amazon file)
 Purchase a book (Amazon LOVES this…)
 Download and transfer a book to a Kindle that does not
have WIFI
 Return the book to the library.
 Other patrons of the library will benefit if you return the
book when you are done, because then it becomes available
to the next person on the list.
 If you do not return the book when you are done, it will
automatically return to the library after the number of days
you selected when you downloaded the book: 7…14…or 21
days.
For any further questions
 Check with the COMPUTER COACH in the office in the
reference department.
Happy Reading
