The student created a documentary about how mobile phones impact teenagers. They interviewed a teacher and student to get different perspectives on the issue. The student used conventions from Channel 4's style guide to make the documentary appeal to a Channel 5 audience. Ancillary tasks like a radio ad and fact insert used clips from the documentary to complement the main product. Feedback showed the documentary title could have been more engaging. The student used new technologies like a MacBook, iMovie, GarageBand, Scribd, SoundCloud and SlideShare to construct, research, plan and evaluate their work. These platforms allowed them to create high quality multimedia content and share it online.
2. In what way does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products
3. Forthe documentary that I have made, I have looked
to use and in some cases challenge the stereotypical
opinion that teenagers have with mobile phones. This
was shown in the interview which I conducted with
the Head of Year 13, at this point, he agreed that
mobile phones did not affect teenagers complete, he
stated that they could help teenagers. However with
the product that I have done, I have looked to inform
and educate the audience though the work that I
have done. I think this was done in my documentary
though the interviews that I did. It was important
that I decided to use two people, this was a student
and a teacher. However I do wish that I had used
more than use one of both parties because then I
would have gained a better understanding from the
people who I looked at and interviewed. If more
people were asked then I would have been able to
find out their opinions and furthermore for them to
agree or disagree on the impact is good or bad
affecting teenagers.
4. To develop conventions in the work that I
did, I looked at using the channel 4 style
guide which was available to download
from their website, I have shown in
another PowerPoint the work which I have
done though using the style guide, I used
the style guide so that I could make my
documentary fit to the market which I was
set to do, this was for a channel 5
audience.
5. How effective is the combination
of your main product and ancillary
tasks
6. The combination which I have created
between my main product and the
ancillary tasks is very effective because
both of the factual insert and the radio
advert had scenes taken from the
completed documentary. The factual
insert has been taken from one of the
devices which the first interviewee says
they do own and the radio advert is taken
from the second interview which was done
and at this point the stereotypical opinion
is being challenged.
7. Looking at the mode of address though the tasks
which I have produced, the audience is expected by
me to understand and see that I have made these so
that the audience knows that I have made this so
that I can educate and inform them on what I feel
about the topic and the opinions that others have.
They will understand the preferred reading that I
hope for them to gain. This preferred opinion will be
seen more by the primary audience of my
documentary, this will mean that they will watch it
and apply it to what they feel about the topic and
relate experiences that they have had. The secondary
audience would watch what is being shown to them
and will not apply it to themselves, this will mean that
they will be interested in the topic and watch but
wont do what the primary audience will do and
understand how technology has affected their
education and school lives
9. To assist me when looking at the work that I did and
possible improvements which could have been made, I
have made a questionnaire which has been fully analysed
using results on the previous PowerPoint.
I have mainly learn that I have done what the audience
had expected me to and also bet some expectations which
they had about the work that I produced.
As part of the feedback which I have found from the
questionnaire, I found that the biggest point that the
audience could have been done better was the title of the
documentary. The first idea of the title for the
documentary was to call it ‘Technology’ but once I found
that this was engaging enough, I decided to change the
title, I decided to call it ‘Technophilia’. The reason behind
this was because it didn’t seem like a boring name to call
the production and so it would make it become more
appealing to the audience and would mean that I could
have more people watch the documentary and express an
interest in the documentary as a whole.
10. How did you use new media
technologies in the construction
and research, planning and
evaluation stages
11. Throughout the work that I did, I used many different
ways to make my whole task as engaging as possible for
the audience, I did this by using many different
technologies
The main product that I used was the use of a MacBook,
this was a learning curve for me because I had not used a
product like this before so I had to give myself some time
to know how to use it, this was a disadvantage because if I
knew what to do and how to use it before I started the
construction stage of my work then I would have had an
advantage. But, this did have an advantage, this was using
the product and the software that was on their compared
to what products are on normal laptops or computers. I
say this because I used IMovie and Garage Band to do my
work on the Apple product, however if I did not use a
Apple product then I would have had to use windows
movie maker, this would have meant that the end product
that I would have produced would have been of a lower
quality and this is what I wanted to avoid because if this
was the case then I would not have felt that I had fulfilled
the needs of the audience and would have produced very
poor quality work.
12. To make my work available to be seen on
Blogger, I had to use a wide range of internet
pages to put work online. This ranged from
using Scridb, Sound Cloud and Slide Share.
Scridb was used to put word documents that
I had created and turned them into PDF’s so
that they could be seen on my website, this
was program which I had not used before so
this took some time to get used to it, but
however this did work to my advantage
because once I got used to how it worked, I
was able to use it more and more and so it
had made documents which I weren’t sure
were able to be on there available to be saw
by everyone who wished to looked at my
work.
13. Sound cloud is a program which was used to make
voice clips and the radio advert which I did able to be
used on my blog page. I used this to put my voice
recordings of my analysis of the documentaries as
this would help make the content that I had already
put on about the documentaries more interactive for
the audience because they could listen to the
response that I had instead of simply just reading the
analysis that I had made.
Slide share was used because this was a program
that I could put the PowerPoint’s that I made about
my work on and also make them interactive for the
audience to look at because I have made the
PowerPoint's that I created informative and creative
though the style that I have adapted in the work
done.
This was hard to use at first due to confusion of
embed coding but once I had came over this problem
everything became straight forward and so this
worked out well for me to use this type of software
programming
