3. Integrating Technology in the middle school: years 5-9 “Author Stephan Arnold shows that mathematically rich learning experiences can literally be in the palm of your hand!” (Arnold, 2004, pg. 15). Arnold explains how graphic calculators used to be used for higher mathematics, but know younger students use them. He says that the apps for Texas Instruments are more like computer software than calculator programs.
4. Integrating Technology in the middle school: years 5-9 Then Arnold presents a number of lesson outlines. He used them with upper primary students up to secondary students. The lessons in the article explore applications to space, data and number. The space lesson was called investigating angle. The data lessons were called data, data, everywhere and data in motion. The number lesson was called curious numbers.
5. Integrating Technology: Personal Reflection When I was in elementary, middle and high school, I didn’t really use a graphing calculator. When we had to graph, we did it manually. I didn’t even own a Texas Instrument calculator. But, my junior year in high school, my math teacher handed out graphing calculators and we were able to use them. He even taught us how to use them.
6. Implementation of Graphing Calculator in Intermediate Algebra with Function Approach in Community College “A major goal of this paper is to document changes that occurred in developmental mathematics classrooms in the community college setting when the graphing calculator Texas Instruments was introduced to students” (Nataliya, 2006, pg. 1). This article just explains how mathematics education has undergone a great change.
7. Implementation of Graphing Calculator in Intermediate Algebra with Function Approach in Community College The author then goes on to say how graphing calculators enable students and professors to spend less time on tasks and allow more time to explore concepts. This give students and professors more freedom to work together. Lastly, it explains how graphing calculators changed the classrooms in community college settings. It explains how graphing calculators help students who are taking developmental mathematics.
8. Cont… Person Reflection I can’t really relate to this article because I have never attended a community college. The article states that the students at the community college take developmental mathematics. I have never taken that class either. On my campus, we can use graphing calculators for class work and homework. We can’t use them on exams.
9. Coping with Multiple Calculator Models in College Algebra “Texas Instruments alone introduced 8 models in a 10 year period” (Farris, 2001, pg. 1). Farris explains how students use different models of this calculator in class and that has it advantages and disadvantages for the professor. He talks about how different calculators solve problems differently. He does his study at Midwestern State University. He explains how the algebra courses have approximately 40 students.
10. Coping with Multiple Calculator Models in College Algebra This table is an example of what kind of calculators that the students use at Midwestern University in the algebra courses. It varied for every student so this can present a problem for professors. Farris further explained how each calculator works and how to use them. For example, he explains how to use these different calculators for order of operations.
11. Coping with Multiple Calculator Models in College Algebra… Person Reflection After reading this article, I had an “a-ha” moment. I knew that there were different types of Texas Instruments but I didn’t know how many. But I agree that this can present a problem for professors. In my math class, every student uses a different calculator. Everyone is always constantly asking our professor how to do problems with their calculators.
12. Conclusion Texas Instruments is a great source of technology that has helped education. Students all over the world use them. They are used in elementary, middle, high school and college. They have different versions to help every type of student. They can also help students and professors work together better at the college level.
