ANCIENT TIMES Piraeus was declared as a township in 517 B.C and it’swalling was finished between 471 and 465 B.C. Piraeusin ancient times, like today, was mostly an introductoryport with a great shipping and freightmotion, especially from October to April, when theweather conditions facilitate the voyages of sailingboats. Except of the trade there was an importantdevelopment in manufacturing with representativedepartments shipbuilding , metallurgy and pottery.
THE PORT In the port the most important port works were done toprovide the possibility to cater to the needs of the portmovement of the time, that reached about 2500 shipsand 1.500.000 tones of cargos per year. There were someother works that were done and helped thedevelopment of the port as the railway connection toAthens in 1869.
INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT The industry covered all the basicdepartments, succeeded in renewing the technicalequipment, overcame the crisis and stood up untiltoday as a basic item of the economic structure of thetown.
