Initially WordNet was developed by George
Armitage Miller & his team at Princeton University.
It is an Electronic Lexical Database.
i.e.- It groups words into Synsets, provides short &
general definitions.
According to WordNet, a synset or synonym set is
defined as a set of one or more synonyms that are
interchangeable in some context without changing
the truth value of the proposition.

It is a combination of both Dictionary and Thesaurus.
Dictionary contains definitions & pronunciations,
Thesaurus contains words according to Synonyms
sometimes Antonyms, WordNet makes a semantic
relationship between them.
e.g.- Search the word “rendezvous”
Dictionary : (randa-voo), A prearranged meeting place
Thesaurus : A meeting planned at a certain time and
place, Synonyms[coming together, meeting]
WordNet : A place where people meet,
“he was waiting for them at the rendezvous”,
=> topographic point, place, spot, coming together
