AVA Shelter Receives Dream Makeover
(Tucson)— The Assistance to Victims of Abuse (AVA) Shelter didn’t have to win a visit from
Ty Pennington and the “Extreme Makeover Home Edition” crew to become a dream home.
Generous Tucsonans took it upon themselves to give deserving women and children a beautiful
place to live.
Spearheaded by Clarita Burke, a Coldwell Banker Success Southwest agent, the AVA Shelter
received a complete interior renovation through the I Have a Dream Makeover project. Burke,
whose daughter is a counselor at the shelter, realized that the home needed repairs and felt that
she could help make it a special place for those in need. She put together a dream team of 45
volunteers and secured donations from local businesses to bring the project to fruition.
The AVA shelter consists of two small houses where victims of domestic abuse can stay for up
to 30 days. In addition to providing a safe haven for women and children, AVA offers its
residents a chance to participate in activities designed to promote physical and mental well-
being.
Over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, Burke’s dream team remodeled the shelter
installing new tile, carpet, and kitchen cabinets. They also repainted all the walls, doors, and
trim. Paint and supplies were donated by Sherwin Williams for the entire project. Fractured
Earth Tile and Stone provided the tile as well as a crew of volunteers and Brad Brewer of
Meridian Design and Construction oversaw the tile installation. MK Enterprises came through
with carpeting, which was installed by Horizon Flooring, and Tony Enriquez designed and built
the custom cabinets.

All of the donated furniture received a facelift with new upholstery from Kate Kimball of
Something Special Upholstery and decorative painting by local artisan Bruce Stewart. Home
Depot gave the shelter wood blinds for all the windows, while Aztec Molding completed the
interior decoration with 14 framed works of art.
Burke’s project is proof that one person can have an enormous impact on the lives of others in
the community. As a result of the I Have a Dream Makeover, women and children of domestic
violence have a safe, beautiful home where they can stand with dignity and know that there are
people who care.
