Quality UX will be required to succeed as we move rapidly into an era of search engine ranking technology that is becoming more opaque, dominated by machine learning, and better than ever at interpreting consumer behavior. If SEO teams can’t influence (or be a central part of) brands’ UX approach, then a key performance lever will be outside of their control. Information graphics have been used for thousands of years to help illustrate ideas and communicate information. However, it requires skills and time to hand craft high-quality, customized information graphics for specific situations (e.g., data characteristics and user tasks). The problem becomes more acute when we must deal with big data. To address this problem, we are researching and developing mixed-initiative visual analytic systems that leverage both the intelligence of humans and machines to aid users in deriving insights from massive data. On the one hand, such a system automatically guides users to perform their data analytic tasks by recommending suitable visualization and discovery paths in context. On the other hand, users interactively explore, verify, and improve visual analytic results, which in turn helps the system to learn from users' behavior and improve its quality over time. In this talk, I will present key technologies that we have developed in building mixed-initiative visual analytic systems, including feature-based visualization recommendation and optimization-based approaches to dynamic data transformation for more effective visualization. I will also use concrete applications to demonstrate the use and value of mixed-initiative visual analytic systems, and discuss existing challenges and future directions in this area.

Aggregating search results from a variety of heterogeneous sources, so-called verticals, such as news, image and video, into a single interface is a popular paradigm in web search. Current approaches that evaluate the effectiveness of aggregated search systems are based on rewarding systems that return highly relevant verticals for a given query, where this relevance is assessed under different assumptions. It is difficult to evaluate or compare those systems without fully understanding the relationship between those underlying assumptions. To address this, we present a formal analysis and a set of extensive user studies to investigate the effects of various assumptions made for assessing query vertical relevance. A total of more than 20,000 assessments on 44 search tasks across 11 verticals are collected through Amazon Mechanical Turk and subsequently analysed. Our results provide insights into various aspects of query vertical relevance and allow us to explain in more depth as well as questioning the evaluation results published in the literature.
