2. Introduction
• As an internal medicine physician, Dr. John Lupiano
draws on more than 30 years of professional experience.
Dr. John Lupiano has held a number of attending
internist positions over the course of his career and is a
graduate of The New York Hospital - Cornell Medical
Center's internal medicine residency program.
A doctor of internal medicine, also known as an
internist, provides diagnoses and nonsurgical treatment
for a variety of medical conditions. Internists must
develop an in-depth knowledge of multiple body systems
and as a result often manage a patient's overall care, be it
in an office or hospital setting.
3. Internist
• Many internists serve as primary care physicians and
develop long-term relationships with patients, in which
capacity they also provide wellness education and mental
health services.
An internist may also choose to pursue a career as a
hospitalist, a position in which the physician oversees
care for admitted patients. Some internists focus their
practice still more narrowly in a particular subspecialty,
such as cardiology or infectious disease. To follow this
path, an internist must complete a one- to three-year
fellowship in addition to the internship and residency
required of all internal medicine practitioners.
