3. An Overview of Internal Medicine
A broad discipline, internal medicine is defined as the treatment of adults.
Practitioners of internal medicine are known as internists and apply a
range of scientific expertise toward the diagnosis and treatment of adults
in need of general physical examinations to complex medical issues.
4. An Overview of Internal Medicine
Given the spectrum of illnesses and conditions included in the expansive
definition of internal medicine, internists must be prepared to address all
types of problems. However, their area of expertise lies in treating chronic
illnesses, juggling maladies that strike all at once, and puzzling out the
origin of an illness by applying diagnostic procedures and technologies.
5. An Overview of Internal Medicine
Many internists prefer to focus their practices on general internal
medicine. However, others opt to subspecialize in one of 13 branches of
the discipline. For example, cardiologists are actually internists who
specialize in diseases and conditions of the heart. Subspecialty training
usually requires internists to add up to three additional years of medical
residency in order to learn their chosen area comprehensively.
