More than Just Lines on a Map: Best Practices for U.S Bike Routes
Looking back at your preliminary task
1. Looking back at your preliminary task (the college
magazine task) what do you feel you have learnt in
the progression from it to full product?
2. Colours
The colours that I use in my preliminary task where all
very bright and didn’t completely match the target
audience I was looking at. However from my research I
found out the conventions for the magazine I was aiming
to create. I also learnt how colours can attract the reader
in a certain way, so I chose my magazine to be black and
white with a small amount of colour to attract the
audiences eye. The colour of my font in the original task
all match not making the masthead stand out. However
in my main task I changed the colours to make the
masthead stand out the more than the cover lines.
3. Presentation-Fonts and text
The fonts I used in the preliminary task are all the same making the
Masthead not individual. When conventionally high end magazines have
a different font for the masthead and the cover lines. The cover lines I
used are also more suited to the target audience and has a smaller
niche rather than a wide range of cover lines. The cover lines in the
preliminary task has a vary wide range of readers. When my final
magazine appeals to a smaller audience allowing me to concentrate on
a smaller audience and make it suit them more.
4. Images
A technique that I have learnt from my first task is how to adjust the image to
become more appealing to the audience. This also brings out the colour in
the gecko to make it more striking. On my first the Image was not taken with
a high end camera not making the image look conventional to normal
photography in magazines. However my image for my final magazine was. So
t6echniques that I have learnt is how use a DSLR and what the different
settings mean on the camera to make the image as good as possible. Also the
composition of my images changed. In the original task There is a lot of
unneeded aspects in my magazines and the position of my person on the
front doesn’t follow the conventions. However I leant that by having the
close up image centred then the image would attract people to my magazine.
5. Photoshop tools
A tool that I used is the burn tool, I used this to darken certain places
on my image so the cover lines would contrast, making it easier to
read.
Another tool that I used is the mask layer tool. I did this so I could
turn my main image black and white, then rub out a small part
revealing the colour.
I also used Character. I used this so I could adjust my text to the
way that I wanted it to look.
6. Overview
Over all my final product I tailored to me specific target audience. When my
original magazine wasn't it had a very large audience. My audience for my
magazine is a more expensive market, my magazine is intertextual to ID
magazine, so the audience of ID will already be attracted to my magazine.
However my original task didn’t have a certain niche and was a lower market.
In my preliminary task I didn’t have a USP, however my cover lines are my USP. BY
having the ‘indie’ and ‘Folk indie’ singers it will attract the audience and be the
USP.
