Seo in simple english
1. There are very few fields that are as misunderstood by outsiders as SEO. When you first meet an SEO
company, it’s likely that you will ask them what SEO is and how it can help you, and after what seems like
hours later, you’re none the wiser. Some companies will make SEO sound either like a subject along the lines
of Einstein’s general theory of relativity or like voodoo magic – completely incomprehensible. So what is SEO,
without any jargon?
Basically, when you have a website for your company, you want as many people to visit it as possible. When
people search for terms on Google or any other search engine, the engine displays sites it believes are most
relevant and genuine. Relevance is measured by analyzing the words, and genuineness is calculated by the
quantity and quality of pages linking to the displayed page. SEO involves optimizing the website to be relevant
to the keywords (or most commonly searched words) pertaining to the site’s topic, so as to get more people to
find the site in Google when they search for the keyword. The higher up you want your site to feature for a
specific keyword, the more relevant and genuine it has to be.
2. Long story short, Google is hard to fool, so there’s a simple formula for success with optimizing websites with
SEO: Quality content + Quality Links = High Search Engine Rankings.
So then the question arises: How does Google rank pages?
Google promotes pages it thinks are the most genuine and trustworthy pages to the top of its rankings. You
need to be one of the people creating these kinds of pages. It is a two pronged strategy – using genuine and
high quality content and building links from high ranked sites.
So to revise, SEO covers writing pages with the words that are most commonly used in searches, and have
your page link on other important and high ranked websites. The more of the quality ranked websites there are
linking to your page, the more quality and ‘appreciation’ your website earns from Google. Google shows its
appreciation for the genuineness of your website by improving your rankings. This is a personified model, but
that’s basically how Google’s algorithms work.
Search Engine Optimization can’t just be done once though – sites change, the Internet changes, links die
(remember that irritating 404 error page?). This makes it important to keep up this ‘quality management and
control’ for websites.
On the topic of links, a link to your page from a certified and high ranked website is kind of like a
recommendation from that site saying, ‘Yes, I know this site, it is genuine and I can vouch for it.’ Like
recommendations, quality wins over quantity.
Fewer higher valued links will have a bigger impact on Google’s engine than a million low quality ones – it’s an
exponential difference and can’t be compared.
What does all this mean for you?
1. When you create a website, make sure you provide something people need. Entering a saturated
market automatically makes your SEO climb that much harder.
2. Don’t stuff with keywords – Google can spot that like a hound on the trail. Use genuine, relevant content
for best results, using the keywords to provide you with a basis for the content.
3. Build links. How? Networking and online socializing, exchanging inbound links for products, etc.
4. Watch the traffic go up when you follow these steps.
