While mortgage rates have flirted around
4% throughout 2017, buyers had a hard
time securing a home in these low
inventory conditions. Indeed, buyer
demand is outstripping housing supply.
Builders, however, are promising to add
more inventory. Mortgage applications for
newly built homes rose nearly 8% in
December, according to the Mortgage
Bankers Association.
For 2017, mortgage applications posed a
7% increase over 2016, according to the
MBA.
“We forecast that new home sales fell in
December but remained nearly 16%
higher than a year ago,” said Lynn Fisher,
MBA vice president of research and
economics. “We are anticipating only
modest year over year growth for new
home sales in 2018. Despite robust
demand, a lack of labor and land will
continue to constrain home builders.”
