Lupus erythematosus is a name given to a collection of autoimmune diseases, in which the human
immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal, healthy tissues. Symptoms of these diseases
can af f ect many dif f erent body systems, including joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, heart, and lungs.
Lupus erythematosus may manif est as a systemic disease or in a purely cutaneous f orm also known
as incomplete lupus erythematosus. Lupus has f our main types:
systemic
discoid
drug-induced
neonatal
Of these, systemic lupus erythematosus (also known as SLE) is the most common and serious f orm.

and swelling. Some develop arthritis. Frequently af f ected joints are the f ingers, hands, wrists, and knees.
Other common symptoms include:
Chest pain when taking a deep breath
Fatigue

General discomf ort, uneasiness, or ill f eeling (malaise)
Hair loss
Mouth sores
Sensitivity to sunlight
Skin rash - a "butterf ly" rash in about half people with SLE.

Systemic lupus erythematosus i/sɪˈstɛmɪk ˈluːpəs ˌɛrɪθiːməˈtoʊsəs/, of ten abbreviated to SLE or lupus,
is a systemic autoimmune disease (orautoimmune connective tissue disease) that can af f ect any part of
the body. As occurs in other autoimmune diseases, the immune system attacks the body's cells and tissue,
resulting in inf lammation and tissue damage. It is both a type II and a type III hypersensitivity reaction in
which bound antibody-antigen pairs (immune complexes) precipitate and cause a f urther immune response.

darker than the normal skin.
Discoid lupus erythematosus can be divided into localized, generalized, and childhood discoid lupus
erythematosus.
Drug-induced lupus erythematosus (DIL or DILE) is an autoimmune disorder (similar to systemic lupus
erythematosus [SLE]) caused by chronic use of certain drugs. T hese drugs cause an autoimmune response
(the body attacks its own cells) producing symptoms similar to those of SLE. T here are 38 known
medications to cause DIL but there are three that report the highest number of
cases: hydralazine, procainamide, and isoniazid. While the criteria f or diagnosing DIL has not been
thoroughly established, symptoms of DIL typically present as myalgia and arthralgia. Generally, the
symptoms recede af ter discontinuing use of the drugs.
Neonatal lupus erythematosus is the occurrence of SLE symptoms in an inf ant born f rom a mother with
SLE, most commonly presenting with a rash resembling discoid lupus erythematosus, and sometimes with
systemic abnormalities such as heart block or hepatosplenomegaly

people questioned whether he still had capacity to govern, due to his grave illness and the ballooning
political unrest.
