2. About my project
• Who: Wesley Foundation
• Where: Perkins Chapel on Wednesday night at
8:00
• Why: I want to explain why music is important
at the Wesley foundation worship services.
Religion is very important to many people and
I want to know how music can add to a
religious service and how it affects people at
the Wesley Foundation.
3. About the Wesley Foundation
• The Wesley Foundation is a non-denominational
Christian group that meets Wednesday night’s at
Perkins Chapel.
• Most people who attend the “well” are
undergraduate students at SMU. There are also
bible studies other night’s of the weekend, so
most people who go the the well know each
other very well.
• Usually around 20-30 people attend the well on
Wednesday night.
4. About Perkins Chapel
• Very resonant chapel with a reverb time of 3
seconds.
• Located off SMU boulevard.
5. Type of Music
• Contemporary Christian – Popular music with
vocals, keyboards, guitars, and a drummer.
• Most of the people performing the music have
musical training but are not seriously studing
music.
6. Points of Emphasis
In my project these concepts helped me define
how music impacts people through Wesley.
Locality
Audiotopia
Concept of Performance
Relationship between the median and message.
7. Sources used
• People
• Josh Kun"Strangers among Sounds."
• Ramos, Kittrel. Transnational Cultural
Constructions: Cumbia Music and the
Making of Locality in Monterrey.
8. Examples
• The church and the relationships between
people with the music at the worship in
Wesley can form a small community and
strengthens bonds between people at Wesley.
• The lyrics (some from struggles) in the music
can form a audiotopia (personal reality
through music) and help the people at Wesley
strengthen their faith by turning to God when
they struggle.
